1There are three things you need to know which are not widely known. Think cognitive change not cognitive decline: one way people think about our cognitive function is by comparing it to what it was like when we were in our 20s and it's not a valid comparison. It leads to an assumption that we've declined into deficit.
2Sure, our fluid intelligence – which is about speed and problem-solving – peaks in our 20s, but unless you're a maths whiz or a gun lab researcher, that is less important than what's called your crystallised intelligence, which can actually improve with age. It's the wisdom of knowledge and experience.
3This is about a phenomenon in the brain called scaffolding. To protect our cognitive abilities and perhaps even enhance them as the years pass, our brains build out networks of nerves which act pretty much like the scaffolding inside a skyscraper.
4For The Brain Cliff I interviewed seven cognitive super-agers, who are as different as you could imagine – from the illiterate 95-year-old shoemaker to the woman who taught Mick Jagger statistics and the 94-year-old woman who still works in McDonald's in Kyushu, Japan.
5One example is how they respond to stress. They get over it. They problem-solve. They don't ruminate. And where do you think we ruminate? Yes, in our prefrontal cortex. So you're occupying valuable brain space for cognitive function with unproductive circular thoughts.
6Exercise enhances our brain plasticity, which in turn encourages brain scaffolding. An anti-inflammatory diet – with low amounts of red meat, high diversity of vegetables including leafy greens, fermented foods such as yoghurt and fruits such as berries – can change the microbiome and aid direct absorption of bioactive compounds, both of which support brain scaffolding.
7When the default mode network fires up, parts of the brain that don't normally talk to each other make connections. How do you know if your default network is at work? Your mind wanders. Mind wandering looks as though it's good for your brain.
8One of the important findings from research has been that genes don't play a large role in whether we're on a journey to the brain cliff or when we might reach it. That means the environment and how we live matter hugely. Work is mostly good for our brains. The evidence is strong that cognitive decline speeds up after retirement.

Sure, our fluid intelligence – which is about speed and problem-solving – peaks in our 20s, but unless you're a maths whiz or a gun lab researcher, that is less important than what's called your crystallised intelligence, which can actually improve with age.
并列主句:our fluid intelligence peaks in our 20s, but … that is less important than … crystallised intelligence
插入定语从句:which is about speed and problem-solving —— 破折号内,修饰 fluid intelligence
条件状语从句:unless you're a maths whiz or a gun lab researcher —— unless 引导
比较结构:less important than what's called your crystallised intelligence —— what 引导的名词性从句作 than 的宾语
定语从句:which can actually improve with age —— 修饰 crystallised intelligence
To protect our cognitive abilities and perhaps even enhance them as the years pass, our brains build out networks of nerves which act pretty much like the scaffolding inside a skyscraper.
To protect our cognitive abilities and perhaps even enhance them —— 不定式短语
时间状语从句:as the years pass —— 表"随着岁月流逝"
主干:our brains build out networks of nerves
定语从句:which act pretty much like the scaffolding inside a skyscraper —— 修饰 networks,内含 like 介词短语
An anti-inflammatory diet – with low amounts of red meat, high diversity of vegetables including leafy greens, fermented foods such as yoghurt and fruits such as berries – can change the microbiome and aid direct absorption of bioactive compounds, both of which support brain scaffolding.
主干:An anti-inflammatory diet can change the microbiome and aid direct absorption of bioactive compounds(并列谓语 change + aid)
插入成分:with low amounts of red meat, high diversity of vegetables …
非限定定语从句:both of which support brain scaffolding —— which 指代 microbiome 和 absorption 两者
One of the important findings from research has been that genes don't play a large role in whether we're on a journey to the brain cliff or when we might reach it.
主干:One of the important findings … has been that …(that 引导表语从句)
表语从句主干:genes don't play a large role(in whether … or when …)
介词宾语从句:in whether we're on a journey to the brain cliff or when we might reach it —— whether 与 when 两个从句并列作 in 的宾语

(Retirement is bad for your brain)。
仿写题:仿照第 7 段的句式 "When the … fires up, parts of … that don't normally … make connections.",围绕「灵感」或「学习」写一个句子。
